The Lawnmower Blenny is a very good choice for every aquarium. Although not particularly beautiful, blennies are known to eat algae as their favorite meal and help to keep the fish tank clean. The Lawnmower Blenny has a big personality and will add some humor to any saltwater fish tank. It is a hardy, active and inexpensive marine aquarium fish. The Lawnmower Blenny has a typical blenny shape, a body that is long and slender with one long dorsal fin extending the length of the body. The Lawnmower Blenny is drab looking with a long whitish body and gray to tan colored vertical bars on the sides. Its head is blunt with the eyes perched up high on the head. It has small light-blue dots that adorn its face, and delicate feathery projections called 'cirri' around the face which lend its true character. The Lawnmower Blenny will sit on the bottom of the aquarium with a curved stance. It is easy to keep if provided the right environment with plenty of algae. The Lawnmower Blenny does not need much care or time and therefore makes a great addition to any aquarium. They are mostly found in the Indo-Pacific, East Africa and Red Sea to Micronesia. Both male and female blennies have two spines in the anal fin. In the female, one or both may be smaller, or even embedded; while on the male, they may be capped with a fleshy tissue. The Lawnmower Blenny is a peace loving organism and is safe to keep in tanks with other inhabitants. Being primarily vegetarian, the Lawnmower Blenny has teeth that are adapted at scraping algae from the surface of rocks and the walls of the tank. They have incredible jumping ability and are known to jump from pool to pool, which lends to the other name they are known as: "Rock Skipper", so a covered tank is highly recommended.

The Lawnmower Blenny, a.k.a. Algae Blenny, is a very popular algae eating blenny. These fish have a long slender body with a long dorsal fin that extends the length of their body. They are usually tan and white in color and love to perch on rockwork. The Lawnmower is aptly named for its ability to mow down hair algae. These fish have tons of personality. They make an excellent addition to any reef tank. They should be offered algae sheets on a regular basis if regular algae growth is not available. The Blenny Family is commonly confused with the Goby family. The Blennies are distinguished by their single continuous dorsal fin and habit of resting on the bottom with their body curved. These fish will usually have tiny appendages on the top of their heads called "cirri". Some Blennies inhabit tidal pools where the water is warm and shallow. They have incredible jumping ability and are known to jump from pool to pool, which lends to the other name they are known as: "Rock Skipper". Other Blennies are found hiding in crevices and caves at coral reefs. These fish have blunt heads and their teeth are combed, giving them the ability to scrape algae -- their primary food source -- from rock surfaces.Photo by member, Mark A. Barbieri.
