The Yellow Clown Goby is a small fish who does not bother other fishes, and is easy to care for, which makes it a very good choice for novice aquarists. The Yellow Clown Goby can be kept singly, or in pairs in any tank. It looks really interesting, how they sit comically on a rock or hover in the water column and wait to be fed. The Yellow Clown Goby should not be kept in tank less than 5 gallons for a single goby, and 10 gallon for multiple gobies. It is considered reef safe as it only prefers to live in corals to perch on, however nipping of slime protruding from the coral may become problematic to the coral if it receives too much attention from a yellow clown goby. It also does well in a larger aquarium, where it may select its territory. The Yellow Clown Goby is generally not compatible with same species, else it is not aggressive or excessive territorial to other fishes. One species to avoid is the larger citron goby, which can be aggressive and might bully the Yellow Clown Goby to death. For its smaller size, it might become food for many larger fishes, therefore avoiding housing it with larger wrasses, hawkfish or basses, and predatory fish, such as lionfish or triggerfish. The most common issue with bringing the yellow clown goby into captivity is that it doesn?t accept food. There is no such distinct feature to differentiate males and female, therefore breeding becomes quite difficult in captivity. Often, it spawned only if provided good nutrition and a comfortable environment. Some can be stubborn in accepting foods in captivity, therefore we advise you to first get the Yellow Clown Goby adjusted to small frozen foods, and then give it larger foods, such as enriched brine shrimp.

Some of the Goby species are known to share their burrows with Pistol Shrimp; behavior that can be duplicated in the home aquarium. Most Gobies have cupped ventral fins that nearly join just below their gill plates that serve as perching mechanisms so the Goby can always be on the lookout in a resting position.
