The Atlantic Blue Tang is commonly referred to as the Blue tang, Blur tang, Blue tang surgeonfish, Blue doctor, Blue doctorfish, Yellow doctorfish, Blue barber, and Yellow barber. It prefers to live in holes and crevices to hide themselves from predatory species that is why the yellow juveniles are mostly found to be hidden and comes out rarely in the wild. The Atlantic Blue Tang is generally active during the day time and stays hidden during the night. It is known to set up cleaning stations where it has been observed removing parasites and molted skin from other species. The Atlantic Blue Tang grows up to 15 inches in the wild but is imported at a much smaller size and should be kept in a tank not less than 40 gallons. With its beautiful and distinct coloration, the Atlantic Blue Tang makes a gorgeous addition to any tank. It features spine on both sides of its caudal peduncle, which is used for protection and to establish dominance. At the juvenile stage, it displays a bright yellow color and that change into hues of blue during adolescence. The Atlantic Blue Tang thrives well in a temperature range of 77-82 degrees Fahrenheit and pH of 8.0-8.4. Decorate the aquarium with plenty of live rocks and hiding spots, which allows it to carry out its natural scraping and sorting behavior. The Atlantic Blue Tang should not be housed with similar species, since it can turn aggressive. It is very sensitive to changing water parameters and is important to keep the water as stable as possible; therefore, we advice to maintain powerful water movements and high levels of oxygen in the tank. Naturally occurring algae is rarely enough and it is therefore a good idea to supplement with fresh algae, dried algae and algae based foods, e.g. spirulina flakes and pellets. The Atlantic Blue Tang should be fed as often as possible throughout the day instead of just one or two large meals.

The Atlantic Blue Tang is unusual in the way that the adult fish coloration differs greatly when compared to the juvenile fish. The name "Blue Tang" refers to the adult fish, as young specimens are bright yellow with only a trace of blue around the eye and bases of the fins. Adults contain yellow only in the caudal fin, while the body is a brilliant, opaque blue with a wavy horizontal purple pattern. Interestingly the color intensity varies depending on the mood of the fish. This fish can grow to just over 15 inches. This tang will spend a lot of time scraping the rocks for algae. It is recommended to provide macroalgae for this fish to maintain optimal health such as agar or gracilaria.Provide a good amount of swimming space. Juveniles may be fin nippers at times. The ideal temperature for this tang is in the seventies to low eighties F. pH need to be buffered and sustained between 8.0 and 8.4. Organic levels should be low to non-existent, with a maximum of 25 ppm nitrate and no ammonia or nitrite. Atlantic Blue Tangs like forceful water movements and aeration.
